What is angiology and vascular surgery?

Angiology is a medical specialty that is responsible for studying the human circulatory system, the lymphatic system. It includes the circulatory vessels and the lymphatic vessels. Angiology and vascular surgery are responsible for the diagnosis of diseases caused by the circulatory system and the lymphatic system, in addition to their treatment. As a note, within this specialty the heart and intracranial arteries are excluded.

This specialty includes diagnoses related to arterial diseases, including the aorta and arteries, as well as cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension or high cholesterol, for example.

What type of test is performed to diagnose vascular diseases?

There are different ways to perform a medical exam. One of them is the physical examination inspecting the veins, lymphatic vessels and tissue perfusion and palpation of the pulses in the affected regions.

Another type of examination is the ultrasound examination of the arteries or veins, using a Doppler ultrasound. In some cases and for a better and more exhaustive diagnosis, an X-ray with contrast media is included.

What types of treatments are there?

Always taking into account the type of diagnosis, treatments for diseases of a vascular or circulatory nature can be divided into:

• Medical treatment: they consist of medical therapies focused on the prevention and treatment of possible or future vascular diseases.
• Surgical treatment:
  • Endovascular treatment: they are invasive remote therapies. They are performed through catheters and guides.
  • Open surgical treatment: it is a type of treatment that deals with solving the injuries that exist in the blood vessels of the organism.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: these are endoscopic or laparoscopic techniques that can be combined with other therapies and are the responsibility of the vascular surgeon..
